International Students

Sewanee: The University of the South welcomes applications from students from around the world. International students are an important part of Sewanee, participating in the many varied aspects of campus life. If you are looking to study in the United States, we encourage you to consider joining us on our 13,000 acre campus.

*Please note: International students will be notified of their Admission Decision by e-mail. Official admission letters and documentation will be mailed after a student has accepted our offer of admission.
Application Requirements

The application procedures for degree seeking international students differ from that of domestic students. If you have questions about the application process, contact Jessica Hardy, Coordinator of International Student Recruitment, at international@sewanee.edu or 001-931-598-1464.

Sewanee cannot review your application until we have of the items listed below. Make certain that you have your application materials submitted before the deadlines. There is no application fee for international students. All application documents must be notarized translations in English.

  • Application Fee (waived):  Sewanee does not have an application fee for domestic or international students. Application fee waivers are not required.
  • Common Application: Sewanee only accepts applications from the Common Application. Begin your application at www.commonapp.org.
  • International Supplement: The supplement is required for admission, and it can be completed online in conjunction with the Common Application. (PDF)
  • Official Secondary School Transcript: An official record of grades earned in all secondary courses and examination results must be submitted; a brief explanation of the marking system at your school is encouraged.
  • Teacher Recommendation Letter:  At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher is required (PDF).
  • Counselor Recommendation Letter: A letter of recommendation from your college counselor, headmaster, or appropriate school administrator is required (PDF).
  • Standardized Test Scores: Submit one or a combination of the following assessments. The official test scores must be sent to Sewanee from the official testing agencies. The SAT test code is 1842, the ACT 4024. We may also request additional information in order to review the application. International students cannot apply test optional.
    • The College Board SAT: Sewanee requires a combined SAT score of Critical Reading and Math that should be in the range of 1140-1340; this would require a minimum of a 500 on the critical reading score.
    • The American College Testing exam (ACT): Sewanee requires a composite ACT score within an admissible range of 25 - 30, with a minimum score of 20 on the English sub score.
  • Proof of Proficiency in English: If English is not your native language, an official TOEFL score or an official IELTS score that demonstrates fluency in English is required for admission to Sewanee. The University does not offer a conditional admission program for students lacking fluency in English. Sewanee’s TOEFL test code is 1842.
    • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Sewanee requires a minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based), 550 (paper-based), or 80 (internet-based) respectively. Scores from any of the three testing formats may be submitted, but only one is necessary
    • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Sewanee requires a minimum score of 7
  • Statement of Financial Responsibility: Though there is full or partial financial assistance available for International Students, Sewanee requires proof of available funds to assist with the cost of tuition, fees, health insurance, books, initial taxes and personal expenses.   • International Student Grant Essay (optional): Students wanting to be considered for Sewanee’s International Student Grant Program must submit an additional essay as a part of their application. More about the international grants and the form to submit your essay can be found here.
