International students are an important part of Sewanee’s fabric, participating in all aspects of campus life. It is through these students and programs such as study abroad, Sewanee students can have a global student experience.

If you are interested in studying at Sewanee, please read through the information below and explore the website to learn more about the requirements for international students.

Application Materials, Deadline, and Fees

  • Sewanee exclusively accepts the Common Application for international students.
  • Application materials must be submitted to Sewanee by February 1.
  • There is no application fee charged to international students.
Application Requirements
  • A transcript of grades earned in all high school courses including a grade point average (GPA) must be submitted. All application documents must be notarized translations in English.
  • If English is not the student’s native language, official results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required. To be competitive in our applicant pool, Sewanee requires a minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based), 550 (paper-based), or 80 (internet-based) respectively. Scores from any of the three testing formats may be submitted, but only one is necessary. The university does not offer a conditional admission program for students lacking fluency in English. More information can be found at Toefl.
  • All applicants also have the option to submit results of the new Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) I or American College Test (ACT) with writing. More information can be found at the College Board.
  • Results for the SAT or ACT and the TOEFL must be sent directly to Sewanee by the testing agency. The SAT test code is 1842, the ACT 4024.
  • An official bank statement, or a letter from your corporate sponsor or bank on official letterhead, stating the amount in $U.S. of funds available for college expenses is also required.
Financial Aid/ Scholarships
  • Sewanee offers scholarships to international students applying as freshmen for the fall semester ranging in value from partial to full tuition, room and board, and fees.
  • The highly competitive selection process involves an evaluation of a student’s academic record, teacher recommendations, personal essay, extracurricular involvement and leadership, and his or her test scores on the TOEFL and/or SAT/ACT.
  • All international students are considered as merit scholarship candidates; the December 9 merit deadline is only for U.S. students. International students, however, are not eligible for need-based financial aid from the U.S. federal government.
